Philippines' Inquirer publish fake and unflattering PNoy 'Time' cover #anyare

The Philippine's leading newspaper, the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Saturday was taken in by a fake cover of “Time Magazine” depicting President Aquino with his unflattering open mouth, running the picture on its front page and website.

PDI was quick to apologize with a statement that "We stand corrected. It was an honest mistake," issued by the Inquirer's editor-in-chief Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc while Aquino spokesman Ricky Carandang told AFP he did not wish to comment.

Inquirer also acknowledged the mistake via its @Team_Inquirer Twitter account: “An honest mistake, but we do wish President Aquino was on the cover of Time Mag’s ‘100 Most Influential’ issue,” Inquirer tweeted.

“Time” named President Aquino on its annual list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World."

The photo Inquirer used was an Internet meme and was not one of the seven on the list who graced the covers of the magazine's US and global editions, according to the magazine's website.

In the magazine, “Time” praised Aquino, son of the late Filipino leader and democracy icon Ninoy and Corazon Aquino, for "making his own name." The magazine further said:

"The sputtering economy stabilized and became hot. Aquino pushed through a reproductive-rights law that many said was impossible in the fervently Catholic nation,"

"Most important, he became the face of the regional confrontation with Beijing over its claim to virtually all of the South China Sea. It is a brave stance, the long-term consequences still unknown."
